Terms of service

Last updated August 15, 2026

These are the terms for using Locus, written to be read rather than skimmed past. Using Locus means you agree to them. The short version: Locus shows you your own financial data and an agent's best-effort reading of it. It never holds your money, its categorizations can be wrong, and nothing in it is financial advice.

1What Locus is

Locus is a personal money app. You connect bank accounts through Plaid; Locus keeps your transactions in sync, lets you organize them into budgets, and runs an AI agent that investigates individual charges: it searches your history, can search the web, and with your permission can consult email, calendar, and location evidence, then records a category, a confidence score, and its reasoning, along with the full trace of how it got there. The product is pre-launch, which means it is changing, sometimes quickly.

2Who you are dealing with

Locus is built and operated by an individual founder in the United States, not by an incorporated company. Locus is not a bank, is not a financial institution, and is not affiliated with your bank. It cannot move your money: it reads transaction and balance data through Plaid, holds no funds, and has no ability to initiate payments.

3Your account

You sign in through Clerk. Keep your sign-in method secure; whatever happens under your account is treated as you. You must be old enough to form a binding agreement where you live, and the information you give us has to be your own and accurate.

4Bank connections

When you link a bank, you authorize Locus to retrieve your transaction and account data from that institution through Plaid, on a schedule you control and when new data becomes available. You enter your bank credentials with Plaid, never with Locus. Plaid's own terms and privacy policy apply to what Plaid does. Only link accounts you are entitled to link. You can disconnect a bank at any time in the app, which revokes the connection at Plaid and deletes its data from Locus.

5The agent, and its limits

The agent's verdicts are automated inferences, and automated inferences can be wrong. A confidence score is the model's own estimate, not a guarantee. The agent is designed to escalate to you rather than guess when the evidence is thin, and your own categorizations always outrank its verdicts, but you should still expect mistakes: a mislabeled merchant, a reimbursement matched to the wrong charge, a category you would not have chosen.

6Acceptable use

Be ordinary. Specifically, you agree not to:

7Your data

Your financial data is yours. You give Locus permission to store and process it as needed to run the service, exactly as described in the privacy policy, which is the authoritative description of what is collected and shared. Delete your data at any time, as described there.

8Fees

Locus is currently free. There are no subscriptions, no payments, and no pricing. If paid plans ever exist, they will be introduced with clear notice and your explicit agreement; nothing will start charging you silently, and these terms will be updated first.

9Availability

This is pre-launch software run by one person. There is no uptime commitment, features may change or disappear, and the service may be paused or shut down. If the service is ever shut down for good, you will get notice and a way to obtain your data first.

10Ending things

You can stop using Locus at any time and delete your account, which immediately and permanently removes your data as described in the privacy policy. We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, endanger other users' data, or put the service at risk; where reasonable, we will tell you why. Termination by either side does not entitle anyone to keep your data: deletion follows.

11No warranty

Locus is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted operation. We do not promise the data shown is complete or current, or that the agent's conclusions are correct. This is stated plainly here instead of in a block of capital letters, but it carries the same weight.

12Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent the law allows: the operator is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, for lost profits or lost data, or for decisions you make in reliance on categorizations, budgets, or the agent's reasoning. For everything else, total liability arising out of your use of Locus is capped at one hundred US dollars or the amount you paid for the service in the twelve months before the claim, whichever is greater. Since the service is currently free, that means one hundred US dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

13Changes to these terms

When these terms change, the date at the top changes with it. If a change matters, such as fees appearing or your rights shrinking, we will give notice in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Locus after a change takes effect means you accept it; if you do not, delete your account.

14Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and, where state law applies, the law of the state in which the operator resides. We would much rather resolve any problem by email than anywhere else: write to security@locus.cash first and we will try to sort it out.
